For or Against Calvinism

Head over to the White Horse Inn and listen to their podcast featuring Dr. Michael Horton (For Calvinism) and Dr. Roger Olson (Against Calvinism) as they engage in conversational theological discussions over the ongoing Arminian/Calvinist debate.  Dr. Olson admits that he is no debater but rather he and Michael Horton engage in a conversation which is somewhat different from a debate.  I enjoy this type of theological discussions as well where we are seeking to learn from one another and not merely to try to build up straw men and tear them down.  The point of the conversation is not to declare a winner or to try to put together better arguments than your opponent but to just engage in meaningful and friendly discussions over theology.  That is my cup of tea.

The program is Dr. Horton’s so the first edition of the podcast seems to me to more bent toward giving Mr. Horton more time than Dr. Olson but I am okay with that since it is Dr. Horton’s program and perhaps they will give more time to Dr. Olson the next program.

You can find the program here.

  2. Just for clarification – In their opening commentaries at this event Dr. Horton simply took more time than Dr. Olson. If you want the complete conversation audio you can go here and purchase it:

  3. I was wondering if someone can help me here. I have been talking with a Calvinist brother and he implied that the Reformed position was more legitimate because there are more popular Calvinistic preachers like Piper, Driscol, Sproul, etc and he didn’t know any popular Arminian Preachers in comparison. Can someone help me with this one? I could only think of Chuck Smith and Dr Brown off the top of my head. Can someone refer me to a few mainstream Arminian preachers/teachers. Thanks in advance.

    • Joel Osteen is not a Calvinist. LOL.

I do think the Calvinists have preachers on their side for now. This has not always been the case of course. John Wesley’s Arminianism and the Methodist Church crushed Calvinism in the 19th century to the point that Arminianism dominated Christianity heading into the 20th century. Sadly, modernity led to the demise of evangelical Arminianism.

As of late, the Calvinists have had the upper hand when it comes to prominent preachers and teachers. I find it ironic that Calvinists often will claim that the Church is largely Arminian and that they are the minority. This is not been the case in my experience. Most of the Church is largely either Calvinists or semi-Pelagian but not Arminian.

A few names for you though. Jim Cymbala, Carter Conlon, Ravi Zacharias (though he does not claim Arminianism but simply Christian but his theology is Arminian in essence), Loran Livingston, Mark Cahill, and Vic Reasoner. None of these are as known as say Dr. Piper or Dr. MacArthur or even Mark Driscoll but all are good preachers in their own right. Dr. Mark Rutland too would be added in there and you are familiar with him and his preaching.
