Best Books on the Suffering and Resurrection of Christ
Last year I read Tim Challies and he recommended two books on the suffering and resurrection of Jesus that he felt were the best books he had read on the subject. The two books were:
1. The Cross He Bore by Frederick Leahy
2. The Truth of the Cross by R.C. Sproul
I purchased book. Read both. Loved both. I do recommend you to read these books. Leahy’s book will move you to tears as he takes you moment by moment through the final hours of Jesus’ earthly life. He shows the significance of the Lord Jesus in the cross and how it pleased God to crush Him for our sins (Isaiah 53:10).
Sproul’s book is just as good. He shows the necessity of the cross and how Jesus gave His life for sinners.
Both books were written by Calvinists but both are well written, avoid Calvinism in this case, and both should be read by all disciples of Jesus especially as we approach Resurrection Day and we remember the cross, Jesus’ shed blood for our sins, and His being raised from the dead where He now sits at the right hand of God praying for us (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25).
One final book suggested. I also recommend God’s Integrity and the Cross by Richard S. Taylor. This book focuses on the subject of the atonement and what the Bible teaches about the suffering and resurrection of Jesus. Taylor goes through, briefly, various views about the atonement and shows the weaknesses and strengths of various views. The book focuses you on the reality that Jesus gave His life for us. Taylor also is an Arminian in his approach.
